Indie rockers Girl Friday incorporate elements of '90s alt-rock, the jangle pop of the Bangles, punk, and more into their hooky, alienated songs. Their first album, Androgynous Mary, arrived in 2020. Girl Friday took root when guitarist Vera Ellen was visiting a friend at UCLA and heard Libby Hsieh playing bass on the couch. Drawn to her style, Ellen introduced herself, and the two were soon playing together regularly. They eventually added guitarist Sierra Scott and drummer Virginia Pettis to the mix through a chain of common friends. Liking what they heard, they began writing songs together as a group and booking shows around town. The EP Tiny Hats appeared on Economy Music in 2017. The band signed with Hardly Art for the follow-up EP, 2019's Fashion Conman. In the meantime, the bandmembers bonded over personal struggles and feeling marginalized from normative society. They channeled those frustrations into their full-length debut, Androgynous Mary, which saw release on Hardly Art in 2020. ~ Marcy Donelson
