Dustin Lynch

Dustin Lynch

On his self-titled debut, country newcomer Dustin Lynch takes familiar Nashville themes and makes them sound fresh thanks to his smart, heartfelt songwriting touch and sincere, deep-toned vocals. The Tullahoma, Tenn., native comes across as more than just another Music Row hat act; there’s a classy, unaffected quality to his singing that breathes life into his lyrics. Setting the keynote here is “Cowboys and Angels,” a poetic account of a backroads love affair with a bittersweet glow. Moody numbers like “Hurricane” and “Waiting” further develop Lynch’s romantic persona. “Wild in Your Smile,” “Dancing in the Headlights," and “Name on It” are upbeat party tunes loaded with the sort of Dixie-centric imagery that makes for big radio hits. Especially catchy is “She Cranks My Tractor,” a country rocker driven by banjo licks and boasting an ear-snagging chorus. At the other extreme is the bonus track “Your Plan,” an acoustic ballad that handles its spiritual content with unusual sensitivity. Overall, Lynch makes all the right moves for mainstream country success without compromising his natural charm or artistic integrity.
