A milestone 10th studio album, From a God to a King houses a summation of Kelly Khumalo’s journey, with assistance from vocalists Sbu Soule, Mbuso Khoza and Mthunzi. Across the seven-track offering, the singer-songwriter’s textured vocals are layered over sonic landscapes shaped by producer Mondli Ngcobo, as she finds solace in her spirituality and the tranquillity of self-contentment. Between soothing iterations of Afropop, soul and gospel, Khumalo leans on the protection of God (“Akathintwa” and “Isivikelo”), celebrates love (“Mina Nawe” and “Uyathandwa”) and highlights the importance of perseverance in romance and life (“Ngisize” and “Uzoma”). A palpable sense of healing accrues from these reflections, while the mellow acoustics, minimalist percussion and emotive keys animate the Zakwe-assisted closer “Bazokhuluma”—a companion piece of sorts to “Uzoma”—which rhythmically captures Kelly Khumalo’s resolve.
