In 2018, Quebec's Antoine Corriveau became the first French-language artist to sign to Secret City, which says something about his power to break through language barriers. He started out as a graphic artist and considers himself, first and foremost, a raconteur, or storyteller—part of a long tradition of boundary-pushing French singer/songwriters like Alain Bashung. He reveres iconoclasts like Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Nick Cave (all poets first, singer/songwriters second), and you can hear that in his grave, intimate work, which is both addictive and revelatory, with a pop sensibility that is never fully submerged.
