Woody Shaw Essentials

Woody Shaw Essentials

This under-appreciated trumpeter had the respect of virtually every jazz camp during the controversy-strewn ‘60s. Miles dug Woody; Eric Dolphy recorded with him, too. In the ‘70s, Shaw avoided the turn toward fusion, continuing to let his supple tone carry him through a series of different groups (one adventurous date found him playing with Anthony Braxton and Muhal Richard Abrams). This playlist draws from Shaw's classic work with Dolphy and Freddie Hubbard, and includes a few lesser-known sessions with the likes of Andrew Hill and Chick Corea.
