The Superchunk frontman did just that in 1992 when he formed Portastatic, a side project for his quirky ideas that explored sounds like bossa nova and folk. It didn't stay that way for long, as the solo act grew into a full band with a catalogue expansive enough to warrant a rarities compilation while also serving as an outlet for McCaughan's soundtrack work for films like 2006's Who Loves The Sun.
