Portastatic Essentials

One of the most acclaimed songwriters in indie rock, the prolific Mac McCaughan can write melodic hooks for days, and for multiple acts. The Superchunk frontman did just that in 1992 when he formed Portastatic, a side project for his quirky ideas that explored sounds like bossa nova and folk. It didn't stay that way for long, as the solo act grew into a full band with a catalogue expansive enough to warrant a rarities compilation while also serving as an outlet for McCaughan's soundtrack work for films like 2006's Who Loves The Sun.
