Phish Essentials

Phish are the wily anarchists of the jam band movement. Cutting their teeth in the neo-hippie scene of the early '90s, the Vermont ensemble blur the line between exploratory improvisation and cheeky, anything-goes art pop. The live staple “Bouncing Around the Room” is an infectious example of their interwoven vocal hypnotics and cartwheeling melodies, and the extended “Tweezer” is jazz-funk that's as loopy as a carnival funhouse. Phish have also cultivated an introspective side; “The Line” (a standout on 2014's Fuego) is a finely crafted pop-rock meditation on ageing and insecurity.
