Italy has an extraordinarily rich cultural history, and music takes pride of place as a national touchstone. Perhaps opera, which was born in the country, is the most famous example, but Italians have long been pioneers in every style—from the medieval Trecento period, through the Renaissance and Baroque, right up to cutting-edge contemporary music.
