Hoagy Carmichael: The Songwriters

Hoagy Carmichael got his start in the ‘20s as a pianist and composer who was smitten with the raucous sound of early jazz. But from the beginning he had an ear for ballads and wrote some of the most beautiful standards of the time. While his songs seem designed for sweet and clear voices, his own singing tone was idiosyncratic, playful and often sounded as if he were winking at you while he sang.
