Emerging from the ’90s Gothenburg scene, Dark Tranquillity are pioneers of Sweden’s melodic death-metal movement alongside At the Gates and In Flames. Across 12 albums and three decades, they’ve written consistently propulsive songs punctuated by prominent electronic elements. Vocalist Mikael Stanne’s death-metal growls on early favourites “Monochromatic Stains” and “Punish My Heaven” give way to more harmonious singing from 2007’s Fiction onward. In 2020, they released Moment, their first album without virtuoso guitarist Niklas Sundin, but tracks like “Phantom Days” and “Identical to None” prove they’re as powerful as ever.
