On their 10th album, Soul Asylum split the difference between throttling rock 'n' roll and quieter, more gentle detours. The jazzy piano number "Cruel Intentions" would feel right at home in an upscale hotel lounge, while "By the Way" is a rootsy, vulnerable declaration of fidelity and romantic devotion. Still, those who prefer the band's ragged, heart-on-sleeve tunes will find much to love here, between the fist-pumping "The Streets" and the muscular '70s power-pop explosion "Let's All Kill Each Other".
