Weird War Essentials

Where The Make-Up channelled ragged ‘60s funk through raucous punk rock, Weird War take a more versatile approach, toning down Ian Svenonius' trademark yowl, taming his bandmates' noisier instincts and widening their range. “FN Rat”, from their 2002 debut, is a blissed-out, slow-burning tribute to classic rock; “Girls Like That” zaps their dance-floor instincts straight to the lo-fi disco. But they can rage when they want to. “If You Can't Beat ‘Em, Bite ‘Em” is as unhinged as any of the players' rave-ups over the years; the lyrics have biting wit, and the guitars bite back even harder.
