Ulver Essentials

This experimental collective has disseminated intense atmospheres since their genesis in 1993, mastering the lo-fi black metal aesthetic of groups like Burzum and Darkthrone. Incorporating folk, noise and dark ambient, Ulver has undergone many surprising—and weirdly uplifting—transformations. Their howling Black Metal Trilogy of the mid-'90s paired nocturnal life and existential despair with gloomy textures and aggressive guitar motifs. Later works are perhaps even more complex, with progressive acoustic guitar, metallic arpeggios and melodic counterpoint that hints at Simon & Garfunkel.
