METZ Essentials

Toronto power trio METZ is famous for its blistering delivery—especially live—but the band’s high-impact noise punk sports a high degree of sinew and nuance, too. Girded by bassist Chris Slorach and drummer Hayden Menzies’ kinetic tandem attack, singer-guitarist Alex Edkins weaves gnarled hooks, bleary effects and cathartic vocals into the band’s considerable heft. Formed in Ottawa in 2007, METZ draws from hardcore and post-punk as well as the formative grunge acts once enshrined by its longtime label Sub Pop, including Nirvana and Mudhoney. The band recruited influential engineer Steve Albini to assist with the live-to-tape recording sessions for self-produced 2017 album Strange Peace, while 2020’s epic “A Boat to Drown In” recalls Daydream Nation-era Sonic Youth in disorienting layers and marathon length alike. But no matter how bludgeoning and distorted METZ gets, the songs’ anthemic drive always comes through loud and clear.
