Joe Strummer: Influences

Joe Strummer: Influences

Although classified as one of punk’s forward-thinking leading lights, the late Joe Strummer was deeply reverent toward music made in decades past. That’s certainly true of his work with The Clash, which drew on upbeat, blues-inspired ’50s rock ’n’ rollers like Bo Diddley and the country outlaw ferocity of Johnny Cash. With his later group The Mescaleros, he expanded this foundation, weaving in rhythms from reggae and Congolese legends Thu Zahina.
