Joe Lovano's richly marbled, aspirated sax tone has distinguished the disparate bands he's led. Yet his versatility is also clear as a sideman: with guitarist John Scofield on “Slinky”, where their lines engage in telepathic, sensual interplay; behind Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga on “Anything Goes”, as his tenor supplies a buoyant swing; or alongside his one-time bassist Esperanza Spalding as he injects “I Can't Help It” with funky insinuations.
