Electro-Swing Essentials

Electronic dance music has frequently turned to the past for inspiration, and electro-swing—a largely European club phenomenon—reaches back to the swing era of the '30s for its unique flavour. Following the lead of hip-hop producers who mined vintage jazz records for samples, electro-swing progenitors like Austria’s Parov Stelar—who coined the genre name in 2005—and French trip-hop crew Chinese Man were among the first to formalise an identifiable aesthetic. Frequently deploying a four-on-the floor rhythmic drive, the music’s producers deftly layer in terse samples of brassy American big bands, buoyant Western swing tracks or the insouciant French jazz Manouche sound pioneered by guitarist Django Reinhardt, bringing a sense of nostalgic joy to their tracks. While producer-driven tunes like Stelar’s “Hooked on You” have expanded the sound to include a strong soul element, groups like Caravan Palace proffer a live band approach, placing violins and guitars alongside electronic beats and cheeky samples.
