CZARFACE Essentials

CZARFACE Essentials

Powered by dusty samples, dexterous flows and splashes of whimsy, CZARFACE have become a pillar of underground neo boom bap. The crew—Wu-Tang Clan’s Inspectah Deck (born Jason Richard Hunter) and Boston underground duo 7L & Esoteric (born George Andrinopoulos and Seamus Padraic Ryan, respectively)—crystallised their eccentric boom bap stylings on their eponymous debut album in 2013. They thread absurdist brags with tightly coiled rhyme schemes that call to mind Wu-Tang Clan’s adventurous lyrical impulses and Doom’s love of comic book aesthetics. So it’s something of an artistic full circle when they collaborate with artists like Ghostface Killah (“Savagely Attack”) and Doom (“Bomb Thrown”, “Meddle With Metal”). Through a prolific catalogue and genuine roots to the era they look to represent, CZARFACE aren’t so much a golden-age revival as an argument against the idea that golden age sounds died in the first place.
