Norwegians 1349 serve up black metal smothered in the kind of grubby, lo-fi vileness that made the scene an underground favourite in the early '90s. With zero use for mood and atmosphere, they bash out hellish chaos like “Sculptor of Flesh” and “Beyond the Apocalypse”, which explode in every direction with punkish guitar screeches, barked incantations and drums that sound like a machine gun chewing up slithering bullet belts. And their sound has only gotten rawer with age: 2014's “Exorcism” came nearly 20 years into their career, and it's just as venomous and flailing as their first recordings.
