About Tyshawn Sorey

Tyshawn Sorey is a drummer, pianist, composer, and educator. A MacArthur Fellow and faculty member at Wesleyan, he is an expressive recording artist whose work embodies everything from modernist jazz to vanguard classical. Sorey's 2017 landmark Verisimilitude erased genre divisions between contemporary classical composition and jazz improvisation. 2018's Pillars was an extended work for sextet. The Adornment of Time, in duo with Marilyn Crispell, followed in 2019. In September 2021, he released For George Lewis with Alarm Will Sound. He returned to post-bop with July 2022's Mesmerism, a standards program for piano trio. In October he followed with The Off Off Broadway Guide to Synergism, a live, triple-disc set with trio and saxophonist Greg Osby using standards as jumping-off points for spirited improvisation. June 2023 saw the release of Continuing his trio. In 2024, Sorey and bassist Linda May Han Oh backed pianist Vijay Iyer on Compassion from ECM.
