About Alexander Briger
Alexander Briger is an Australian conductor. Educated at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he studied violin, and the Richard Strauss Conservatorium in Munich, where he earned a degree in conducting, he went on to assist his uncle, Charles Mackerras, in several performances. He also established himself as a conductor of modern music, studying with Pierre Boulez and the Ensemble InterContemporain. In 1993, he won the first prize at the International Competition for Conductors, held in the Czech Republic. He has given many premieres of modern and contemporary works, in addition to the standard concert and operatic repertoire. He has conducted major orchestras, including the Philharmonia, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Hanover Band, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, among many others internationally. His opera engagements have taken him from Australia to Denmark, Sweden, Germany, England, and Canada. In 2010, he founded the Australian World Orchestra, and serves as its director.
