Victor Hutabarat, an Indonesian prodigy of Christian pop, came to the little-known Malaysian scene in the '80s and set about remoulding its conventions using generous helpings of Western rock. The close vocal harmonies and unorthodox, pop-influenced chord changes he championed helped fire his music—and the genre—into unfamiliar, but welcome, new directions. Rich vocals ride juddering waves of climatic refrains in devotional songs sprinkled with more sombre, melancholy hooks, creating an awe-inspiring, otherworldly and dramatic sound for spiritual reflection.
