The Style Council Essentials

With his mod-punk power trio The Jam embracing Motown sounds before their 1982 breakup, Paul Weller delved into deeper shades of soul with The Style Council. Alongside keyboardist Mick Talbot (ex-Dexys Midnight Runners), Weller updated brassy ‘60s sounds with ‘80s New Wave suavity on “Speak Like a Child”, while showcasing his smoothed-out croon on “My Ever Changing Moods”, a sparse piano ballad that nonetheless judders with intense physicality. Weller and Talbot would part ways in 1989, but not before venturing further afield into jazzy bossa nova (“Have You Ever Had It Blue?”) and synth-speckled electro-funk (“It Didn't Matter”).
