When Rhye’s debut, Woman, dropped in 2013, there was a real air of mystery around the project—the album’s disco strings and piano-soul reveries suggested some late-’70s quiet-storm classic you could’ve sworn you’d heard before, while the singer’s angelic sigh of a voice seemed to herald the second coming of Sade. As it turns out, that voice belonged to Mike Milosh, a Toronto electronic-scene veteran who’s used Rhye as a vessel for his most amorous thoughts. On 2017’s “Taste”, his flair for romantic R&B turned downright carnal, while 2019’s “Needed” is an admission of desire as naked as its minimalist trip-hop production.
