Among the participants in Apple’s New Year’s playlist celebration is Michelle Yeoh, the famed Malaysian film star who can be found in massive blockbusters like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. In recent years, Michelle has had notable performances in Crazy Rich Asians, Last Christmas, and the series Star Trek: Discovery. We’ve invited Michelle Yeoh to curate a New Year’s playlist and talk about her memories of the season. One of Yeoh’s favorite parts of CNY is “to celebrate the beginning of a new year together with family. The most precious memory is being with my dad, mum, my family and friends in Ipoh. We love eating, we always have a table full of food and party all through the new year.”  “In Malaysia,” Michelle continues, “Chinese families keep a lot of traditions like new clothes, red lanterns, and traditional foods. In my family, we must dress in red and present tea to parents the first thing in the morning. No sweeping floors, no bad moods, always smiling and happy.”  And what would Chinese New Year be without music? For Michelle, lion dance music is the sound of the new year. “There are many lion dance performances in my hometown during the holiday. It definitely represents Chinese New Year!”  Michelle Yeoh’s theme song for the New Year is a globally famous classic written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie in 1985 to provide aid to famine-stricken African nations. “I will pick ‘We Are the World’ as a theme song of 2020ʼs New Year. I hope we all can go hand-in-hand to save our planet and make a better and peaceful future for our next generations.”  ‘We Are the World’ is just one of many classic pop tunes on her playlist. What’s the motivation behind these vintage throwbacks? “My family loves singing, especially my mum, so most of the songs from my playlist are her favorite karaoke songs,” says Michelle. “So every time I listen to these songs, it brings me a lot of beautiful memories of being with them. I have been traveling and working abroad for the last few years but, the memories of celebrating Chinese New Year with my family never fades.” As a final takeaway, the actress sends her special wishes: “Live long, healthy and prosper, I am Emperor Philippa Georgiou🖖🏻👊🖖🏼.”
