For Breaking Benjamin, alt-metal, post-grunge and hard rock are colours blended into ever bleaker shades of heaviness. Anchored by singer and guitarist Benjamin Burnley, the outfit are as adept at start-stop ragers as they are at pain-riddled ballads with thunderous choruses. But a little bit of light permeates Burnley's dark vision, especially on the 2006 hit “The Diary of Jane”, in which hope seeps out of his baritone voice. Even on 2015's Dark Before Dawn, an album boasting heightened melodic touches, the group ultimately remain devoted to brooding riffs and shadowy textures.
