Lucas Debargue was one of the sensations of the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition: he didn’t take the top prize, but he was a huge hit with the Moscow audience, playing with a winning sense of fantasy. This unique album nicely demonstrates the Debargue magic. In two of Schubert’s less-often-encountered piano sonatas, he reveals a classical poise and feel for poetry that embraces the delicacy as well as the fervid emotions of the pieces. Szymanowski’s Second Piano Sonata—a very different animal composed nearly 100 years later—is a clever pairing, and Debargue plays with considerable passion and conviction.
