R. Strauss: Macbeth, Rosenkavalier Suite & Tod und Verklärung
After 22 years at the helm of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Lan Shui here continues to inspire them to classy music-making as their conductor laureate. He draws some impressively rich and flexible string playing, qualities this programme absolutely demands. The Rosenkavalier Suite, taken quite broadly, swoons gloriously yet never lapses into the sentimental, and the sound is superb. The less-often encountered Macbeth is strongly characterised, while Tod und Verklärung—with its ambitious narrative portraying a dying man’s reflective last minutes—is expertly conducted, the myriad subtle twists and turns superbly conveyed. This is a fine snapshot of an orchestra in top form.
