Robert Robert had a good thing going over his first three albums of English-language clubland electronic music. But he didn’t hesitate to switch it up in 2021 with his first album in French, Silicone Villeray, which found him branching out stylistically and singing his own songs—another first. The experiment was a success, and so Robert Robert—real name: Arthur Gaumont-Marchand—takes it further with this fifth album. Acoustic guitar chords open the wistful title track, on which he croons about losing his bearings and learning to live better. The catchy single “Alex” throbs to irresistible ’80s synths and a jubilant funky beat, as Robert Robert sings of staying out all night after being sent on a bender by a fun friend whose middle name is Trouble. And he heads back to the dance floor on “Peur de Tout”, backed by a four-on-the-floor beat as he sings a heartfelt hook about fearing everything but showing nothing. It’s a misleading admission from an intriguing artist who fearlessly shares more and more of himself with each new album.
