Formed in Virginia in 2007, SOJA combine the grooves and spirit of reggae with the loose instrumentation of a festival-ready jam band. The effect can be intoxicating, especially when amplified by the group's eight-piece, big-band sound. On "You and Me", they set a melancholy love song to a slow, soft beat, then add an unexpected twist: a peculiar string solo that haunts every chorus. "I Don't Wanna Wait", meanwhile, is maximalist all the way through, with singer Jacob Hemphill offering urgent lyrics over ebullient horns that seem to share his enthusiasm. "Rest of My Life" may be more patient, but its gentle rhythm is just as bright.
