Pitting Bryan Ferry's quivering vocals and glamorous appearance against the synth-freaked experimentation of Brian Eno, Roxy Music broke through in the U.K. with two excellent albums in the early '70s and—alongside the likes of David Bowie and Lou Reed—blazed the trail for adventurous, gender-bending art-rockers to come. But after Eno left to pursue his free-ranging solo career, the increasingly refined Roxy Music would go on to score great Stateside success with the proto-disco strut of “Love Is the Drug” and their 1982 swan song, the adult-contemporary classic Avalon.
