About Rasheed Jamal

In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. My earliest music memories come from my parents jammin' old school funk, jazz, and gospel. I grew up in the South and we had Blues Festivals in my neighborhood. My uncles played. Me and my cousin Tasha wrote my first song when I was 8. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? D'Angelo, Voodoo JAY-Z, The Blueprint Lil Wayne, Tha Carter II Each of these albums signify a different point in my life creatively. Voodoo is when I started to venture mentally into eclectic sounds. Blueprint is where I fell in love with lyricism and samples. Lil Wayne made me want to make albums. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Messiah Complex (Dr. Phil Valentine)” I wrote this song a few weeks after Nipsey Hussle was murdered. I felt the collective hurt that many felt from his passing, so I wanted to speak on releasing the desire to save the world that many of us who grow up in low income neighborhoods share. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? I met Brian Jackson who directed music for Gil Scot Heron. He played the sample to Blood Brothers which is a song I've performed many times for many crowds. We performed together before we met and it was a joyous full circle moment to share with him. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? I'd like to make music with Madlib, Questlove, Black Thought, and Robert Glasper. I want to write an album at Electric Lady Studios, and to travel the world promoting that album while taking photos and documenting the whole affair.
