About Carl Dawkins

Jamaican singer/songwriter Carl Dawkins is an unsung hero of reggae's formative years, equally comfortable delivering soulful love songs and forensic social commentary. J.J. Johnson produced Dawkins' successful 1967 rocksteady debut, "Baby I Love You," backed by Bobby Aitken's Carib Beats. 1970's "Satisfaction" was not only one of the best-selling singles of the year in Jamaica, but it also ultimately became his signature song. By 1971, he'd cut a few sides with an early incarnation of the Wailers, with Lee Perry at the helm. 1977 brought Dawkins' debut album, Bumpity Road, but by the early '80s he'd stepped away from music. He later began to make sporadic live appearances, returning with Hard Times in 2013. That same year, Major Lazer sampled "Satisfaction" on "Jessica." Two archival collections, 2003's Mr. Satisfaction and 2023's Vol. 2, helped to further introduce Dawkins to modern audiences while he continued to release contemporary singles.
