Clear Moon, the first of Phil Elverum’s two Mount Eerie records from 2012, sees the Washington state songwriter exploring tranquil sounds that also conceal a mysterious sense of unease. On opener “Through the Trees, Pt. 2”, Elverum ponders about “mountains and websites” over a gently strummed acoustic guitar, while songs like “House Shape” and “Yawning Sky” come shrouded in a dense fog of synthesisers and pitter-pattering drums. It’s a bleary collection even by Elverum’s standards, but nonetheless beautiful.
