WeiBird: Year of the Rabbit

“My colleagues always ask, ‘Don’t you think you’re too busy?’” WeiBird, aka William Wei, says. “But for some things, no matter how busy you are, as long as you think they’re important, you’ll find time for them.” In a busy year that included performing at the Taipei Arena and releasing his seventh studio album, Good Afternoon, Good Evening, and Good Night, the Golden Melody Award-winning singer-songwriter found time to enjoy a major life event in 2022. “Getting married really isn’t easy,” he tells Apple Music. “Besides getting mentally prepared, there are also many little details you have to deal with. But I think I’m lucky—I met the right person at the right time.” To mark these milestones and the coming Year of the Rabbit, WeiBird has brought a bit of wordplay to his pop-heavy playlist. The Chinese word for rabbit, 兔, is pronounced “tu”, so his era-spanning selections all feature that syllable, from the Bee Gees’ “Too Much Heaven” to Bruno Major’s “To Let a Good Thing Die”. He’s included a track of his own, too—“Toothbrush”. “I wrote it for my parents. I do think it has a New Year atmosphere, like reuniting with family over the holiday,” he says. “Whenever I go back to my hometown, I use a new toothbrush.” His return home this year will be extra-special: “Every new year, our family has a cooking contest. Everyone cooks a dish. It’s called a competition, but it’s really just everyone eating together. This year, our family has a new member so it should be a very exciting contest.”
