Before vibraphone giant Bobby Hutcherson emerged as a solo sensation, he made his name as a crucial player in the avant-leaning mid-'60s “new thing” movement. His impressionistic approach on landmark albums by Jackie McLean and Eric Dolphy illustrated the breadth of his vision, but he could also lay down visceral hard-bop licks alongside the likes of Grant Green and Lee Morgan with equal grace.
