On his debut album, Grammy-winning Kenyan singer Bensoul opens with a solemn cry on the intro track: “Say a prayer for me/On a night like this… If you’re holding back my love/Oh, I beg you release me.” That opening, along with his exquisite vocal delivery on the silky-smooth production, moulds The Lion of Sudah into a stunningly versatile project on love. Of special note are “Navutishwa”, a brilliant statement on frustration with failed relationships, and “Legalization”, on which he calls for decriminalisation of cannabis: “It’s the answer for the cancer.” A coterie of compatriots like Bien, Savara, Fancy Fingers, Okello Max and Mordecai Dex make appearances on the album.
