’80s Anime Essentials

Anime themes in the 1980s borrowed heavily from the metropolitan disco, fusion jazz and rock common during that decade. “Moete hero” from Captain Tsubasa and Yoshimi Iwasaki’s theme for Touch use grand synth stabs and guitar solos commonly found in ‘80s rock to adrenaline-inducing effect. Performed by Yuki Saito, the iconic Maison Ikkoku theme “Kanashimi yo Konnichiwa” evokes a familiar funk and disco sound that’s now widely known as city pop. These ‘80s anime themes act as time capsules for the sounds and tastes dominating Japan at the time.
