DJ-Kicks: Chromeo (DJ Mix)

Montreal duo Chromeo confirmed their funk bona fides on 2007’s Fancy Footwork, putting on their best Lothario act while unfurling synths as smooth as silk sheets. Two years later, on their DJ-Kicks mix, they proved that while their tongues may occasionally be in cheek, their rhythms are always in the pocket. The set doubles as an introduction to the Quebecois classics they were raised on: Songs from Pierre Perpall, Soupir and Diane Tell are all drawn from the province’s fertile disco scene of the late ’70s and early ’80s, when vocoders and rock guitars mingled with spangly synths and sweetly soulful vocals. Kano’s “Ikeya-Seki” and toba’s “Moving Up”, meanwhile, come from ’80s Italo disco, an equally crucial influence on the duo’s sharp hooks and pert rhythms. But not everything here is vintage: Chateau Marmont, Shazam and Lovelock (aka Steve Moore) all offer contemporary versions of era-appropriate funk and disco, yet they’re so skilfully done that it’s virtually impossible to tell them apart from the real thing. But that’s the fun of strutting through Chromeo’s uncanny valley. In their hands, this stuff isn’t so much retro as simply timeless.
