Directing from keyboard, and with an orchestra that has Chopin’s piano concertos in its blood, Yundi once again shows what an elegant musician he is. He makes a lovely sound, attentive to the music’s singing lines and, equally, to its filigree delicacy. The piano-orchestral rapport is impressive, with moments that sound like chamber music writ large. This is his second recording of the First Concerto, and it shows how much Yundi has grown as an artist in the two decades since he became the youngest winner of the International Chopin Piano Competition. Lived-in performances well worth exploring.
