DJ-Kicks: Hot Chip (DJ Mix)

DJ-Kicks: Hot Chip (DJ Mix)

From the beginning, the DJ-Kicks series has highlighted the overlap between electronic music and other forms, which makes Hot Chip a no-brainer for the series: The UK group’s whole being constitutes an investigation into the possibilities of hybridising pop and indie with dance music’s varied strains. They put their theories cheerfully into practice here: In just the first half-dozen tracks, they blaze through Grovesnor’s winsome indie-dance, Positive K’s early-’90s hip-hop, leftfield electronics from Gramme, Subway and Soundhack, and even decades-old tropicália from Tom Zé. But even when their selections ricochet like pinballs across eras and styles, Hot Chip’s intuitive grasp of the groove keeps the flow going. By the time they slide from Audion’s sinister minimal techno into a blissful finale of Joe Jackson’s “Steppin’ Out” and Ray Charles’ “Mess Around”, it’s tempting to wonder if there’s a song on earth they couldn’t fit into their grand unified theory of good times.
