Shigeto's music combines shuffling boom-bap with a dizzying array of offbeat cadences and time signatures. It's as elastic as anything in the electronic realm; for that, credit Zachary Shigeto Saginaw's training as a drummer. But he's no slouch when it comes to tone colour, either: the Michigan-born musician fleshes out his productions with bells, chimes, thumb piano and vibraphone, and his synth and Rhodes melodies follow jazzy flights of fancy. Hip-hop, IDM and ambient all inform his records, but his music, like his beats, never stays in place long enough to be pinned down.
