Roy Wood Essentials

Roy Wood is an utterly unique art rocker because he's infectiously simple and maddeningly complex. After co-founding The Move and ELO, he formed Wizzard in 1972—that band split their time between glam sing-alongs packed with wall-of-sound horns and Wood's shrieking voice (“Angel Fingers”), and dense, bizarrely constructed stompers featuring two drummers and delirious phasing (“You Can Dance Your Rock 'n' Roll”). Later on, Wood's solo output headed in a whole other direction: “Songs of Praise” is tidy, power-pop utopianism brimming with Beatles-esque harmonies and gospel ecstasy.
