Reminisce Essentials

Reminisce Essentials

Since the release of his debut album Book of Rap Stories in 2012, Reminisce has remained a vital fixture in Nigerian hip-hop. Armed with a unique rasp and decisive delivery, he has consistently performed over four studio albums, a host of singles and collaborations that are rooted in rap, but frequently intersects with the changing sonic waves of Afropop and R&B. A stalwart of indigenised rap across African languages, he joins forces with fellow Nigerian rappers Phyno and Olamide on “Local Rappers” to emphasise ownership of the genre. “Ponmile” stands out as a devastating tale of marital strife and domestic abuse, sung with depth of feeling in the artist’s charming voice. The rapper is declamatory on the throbbing South African house beat of “Diet”, foregrounding his grit and street savvy on the joint collaboration with singer Tiwa Savage and hit-producer Sarz. Off the mic, Reminisce (Remilekun Abdulkalid Safaru) has earned plaudits for his appearance as the enigmatic kingpin in the film King of Boys and its spinoff series, The Return of the King—cult favourites that further establish his popularity in Nigerian pop culture.
