Ice-T Essentials

Ice-T is a godfather of gangsta rap. The West Coast MC's 1986 single “6 ‘N the Mornin'” was a trailblazing song, helping pave the way for N.W.A's takeover. Between 1987 and 1993, Ice released four gold and one platinum album, despite a lack of radio play. Ice was perhaps hip-hop's first controversial star. His spin-off metal band Body Count ruffled feathers with the incendiary “Cop Killer.” President George Bush, Dan Quayle and Tipper Gore all condemned the song, which was removed from a retail store in North Carolina. Ice is also a pioneer in Hollywood—he was one of the first rappers to make the transition to film with attention-grabbing roles in New Jack City with Wesley Snipes and Ricochet with Denzil Washington.
