Faces Essentials

By 1969, British mod-rock pioneers The Small Faces were no more, as leader Steve Marriott split to form Humble Pie. The others continued as the Faces, drafting new white soul-shouter Rod Stewart and young guitar hero Ronnie Wood. The Faces' mix of hard-driving, hard-drinking rock, R&B, blues and folk was full of heart and soul, and they released four now-legendary albums in the early '70s. The smash success of Stewart's concurrent solo career contributed to their rise and demise, and by '75, the band were done, as Stewart became a worldwide sensation and Wood joined The Rolling Stones.
