Cub Sport Essentials

Initially a solo vehicle for frontman Tim Nelson, Cub Sport became a full-blown band in Brisbane in 2010. Early tracks such as the calypso-indebted “Told You So” fit snugly in the alt-pop genre, but by their 2017 album BATS the unit were embracing a gloomier, synth-heavy sound (“Only Friend”, their cover of The Postal Service's “Such Great Heights”). BATS was Nelson's first LP as an openly gay man—he and keyboardist Sam Netterfield married in 2018—and the themes of self-realisation and acceptance are expanded on 2019's third, self-titled album via the swaying synths of “Party Pill” and the joyous positivity of “Sometimes”.
