Boogie Down Productions Essentials

Headed up by the fearsome vocal talents of KRS-One, Boogie Down Productions were a Bronx-based hip-hop collective that scored some of the golden era's most incendiary tracks. A diss war with MC Shan and the Juice Crew over the birthplace of hip-hop first stoked up notoriety for the group. 1987's Criminal Minded is credited with laying down a template for east coast gangsta rap while the following year's By All Means Necessary helped establish hip-hop's political clout. In 1992, KRS went solo after the group released their final album, the rugged Sex and Violence.
