Though the North Carolina-based troubadour initially traded in spare, tremulous folk songs, her palette has expanded over the years: Those skeletal strummed sketches are now accompanied by ragged, clattering rock rave-ups, primordial dirges, and haunting, reverb-heavy waltzes. The amped-up sonics could have dwarfed Olsen's vocals; instead, they've emboldened her.
