It seemed that nothing could commercially break X in the U.S. After four albums produced by The Doors’ Ray Manzarek, X decided to try for a hit by bringing in Michael Wagener, who’d produced Mötley Crüe and would go on to have success with Skid Row. “Burning House of Love” became a mild hit at mainstream rock radio stations, but nothing else on the album clicked commercially. The band's own song called “Love Shack” (before the hit by The B-52's) attempted a vague dance groove. However, “My Soul Cries Your Name,” “Around My Heart,” “What’s Wrong with Me,” and The Small Faces’ "All or Nothing” (which inexplicably was taken off the original album and added as a “bonus track”), connected as the real deal, metallic surfaces notwithstanding. The deluxe edition added an extended version of the aforementioned “All or Nothing,” an extended 12” version of the band's “Wild Thing” cover, a spare, guitar-less demo version of The Replacements’ “I Will Dare,” and a “Rap Outtake Version” of “What’s Wrong with Me” that’s just a teasing minute of X clowning around in the studio.
